The tourbillon watch was invented about 200 years ago by the great French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet.  The tourbillon has a free spung variable inertia balance, which helps the watch maintain accuracy after suffering shocks, and the barrel is both fast-rotating and has progressive recoil, making the force delivered more constant over time.

The tourbillon exists for the same reason that Formula 1 racing cars exits - not because it is something we need, but as a demonstration of the edge of the envelope - the forward edge of man's technical creativity and skill.

The tourbillon is a popular complication because not only does it demonstrate technical expertise but it’s also fun to watch the escapement making rotations in its cage.  The tourbillon watch was invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet and was actually meant for sailors to keep time, but he soon saw the need for it in pocket watches as well.  The tourbillon movement is a highly complex mechanism built to compensate for the influence of gravity.  The tourbillon invention swept the high end watch-making world like a "whirlwind".
