The tourbillon watch was invented about 200 years ago by the great French watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet.  The tourbillon has a free spung variable inertia balance, which helps the watch maintain accuracy after suffering shocks, and the barrel is both fast-rotating and has progressive recoil, making the force delivered more constant over time.

The tourbillon exists for the same reason that Formula 1 racing cars exits - not because it is something we need, but as a demonstration of the edge of the envelope - the forward edge of man's technical creativity and skill.

The tourbillon is a popular complication because not only does it demonstrate technical expertise but it’s also fun to watch the escapement making rotations in its cage.  The tourbillon watch was invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet and was actually meant for sailors to keep time, but he soon saw the need for it in pocket watches as well.  The tourbillon movement is a highly complex mechanism built to compensate for the influence of gravity.  The tourbillon invention swept the high end watch-making world like a "whirlwind".

Tourbillon timepieces, while very visible in the watch media, are still quite rare in terms of units produced. Most models presented by companies other then the established giants, are often limited to tiny lots.  Tourbillon is not a simple timepiece but an artistic and technological marvel.

Tourbillon escapements in wrist watches have no practical purpose, and are produced for the sake of appearance only.  A tourbillon most often makes one complete revolution per minute, which has no effect in the two horizontal positions, but makes all the difference in the 4 vertical positions, since even if a watch is stationary in a random vertical position, the tourbillon makes the escapement spin around its own axis, effectively cancelling out the effects of gravity of each of the 4 generalized positions.  A tourbillon presents today's watchmakers the possibility of higher accuracy than conventional movements.

A tourbillon compensates for the effects of movement and gravity by creating gyroscopic stability within a clock’‘s mechanism.  A tourbillon is a type of rotating escapement that was originally designed to make mechanical watches more accurate.  A tourbillon movement is synonymous with high-quality watches.
